Reading and Homework Policy

Homework is a powerful tool for learning and a necessary part of any student’s mastery of skills and knowledge. Your child is responsible for copying the daily assignments from the homework board into their agendas. You can expect your child will have homework Monday through Thursday. These assignments will usually take no longer than 60 minutes to complete. On weekends, I will make no formal assignments, but students can use this time to work with new words, practice reading and various math skills.

Homework is also part of your child’s overall grade. It provides more opportunities to practice skills to aide in your child’s academic growth. It is important that your child complete assignments to the best of their abilities. Homework will always consist of something your child has already been taught. Using notes, textbooks, and their memory of the taught material should be a great support. If there is a problem, please write a note in your child’s agenda or send a message to let me know, so that I can help your child.

Reading is a very important skill. Everyday people read for various reasons. In an effort to increase your child's exposure to different words, genres, and ideas, the class has a scheduled time at the school library. Comic books, magazines, books from the public library, and newspapers can be used to support and encourage your child to read.  Please ensure your child is reading. Your child should be reading a minimum of 30 minutes daily to help with their academic success.

You can help your child do well on homework assignments and increase their reading by helping him or her set aside a time each night, encouraging good work and reading habits by using the information they have already been taught and contacting me if there is a problem.
