Welcome to Kindergarten!

Hello!
Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year!  I am Ms. Rhonda Hughes and I am very excited welcome you to Kindergarten at Ridgeland Elementary School.  This is my sixth year at Ridgeland and my 19th year as a teacher.  I am looking forward to a fun and exciting year full of growth and learning.
Here are the skills that we will be focusing on.  Please assist your child with these.  Use the videos under the Reading/Open Court Phonics and Math tabs for reinforcement.

Letter recognition

Have your child write his/her name and be able to identify the letters.

Review the sight word list for the month.  Write simple sentences with the sight words.

Practice handwriting.  We are working on neatness and keeping our writing on a straight line.

Practice writing numbers 1 - 10.

Work on counting groups of objects up to 10.
We are going Virtual!  It's only for a few days, so I know we can do this!

Here is our virtual schedule for January 18, 19, and 20.
7:30 - Start logging in
8:00 - Calendar Math
8:30 - 9:15 - Open Court Phonics
9:15-9:45 - Whole Group Reading
9:45-10:00 - Break time - We can't sit behind our computers all day!
10:00 - 11:00 - Math
11-12 Your lunch time and virtual recess time (again, too much computer time isn't healthy!)
1:00 - 2:00 - Small Group instruction and suggested time for iReady reading and iReady math.  Remember you need to complete at least 15 minutes per day on each program.

For Small Group instruction, I will be sending invites to join Teams to a few students at a time.  While I am working with those few students, this is your time for iReady.  Each group is scheduled for a 15 minute lesson on sight words and reading comprehension.  The goal for small group instruction is to improve reading fluency and comprehension.  We will be using the assigned stories on RAZ KIDS for small group instruction.

Group 1:  Logan, Keegan, Christopher, Jayden, and Idien  (1:00-1:15)
Group 2:  Marquise, Alana, Felix, Grettel, Lavon (1:15- 1:30)
Group 3:  Sarah, Briana, Samiyah, Khylik, Cash (1:30 - 1:45)
Group 4:  Javion, Jaiyana, Brielle, Samar, Melany (1:45-2:00)

I realize that not everyone has a device and/or internet.  However, if you are able to log on, please make an effort to do so.

There are 3 things you need to do every day as part of your homework.  1.  Read for 10 minutes with someone or to someone.
2.  Review your sight word list.
3.  Practice your handwriting.
An easy way to take care of 2 and 3 at the same time is to write your sight words!
