Timothy Grade 5 Social Studies, 2018-2019 (Period BRISB)

Course Description

This course has two main purposes. First, I will assist you in creating grade‐level artifacts (proofs) to demonstrate your mastery of South Carolina’s Grade 5 Social Studies standards. Second, I will prepare you for the SC Grade 5 end-of-year exam. It is my job to teach you and facilitate your review of the procedures required to complete scholarly products, and I will provide you with feedback to help you develop a deep understanding of the skills required for exam success. You are expected to achieve Met or Exemplary marks on your end-of-year exam without regard to where you are beginning the year.

Pioneers traveling west could travel down the Snake River to the Columbia River instead of crossing rough, mountainous areas.
The Mississippi River was a great obstacle for settlers who were trying to travel to the West during Westward Expansion. Can you imagine trying to get across a whole river without having modern ships? It was also a good way to move goods down the river quickly!

Substitute Plans for Week of October 22 2016 (1)

Greetings Parents and Scholars.

I will be in Phoenix, Arizona from October 22 to October 26 completing my final doctoral residency. God willing, I will be Dr. Timothy in July of 2019. However, I have prepared your beautiful children for the level of independent study required in my absence. Though the substitute will be the adult facilitator in the room, your children will be prepared to continue learning in my absence. Please see the independent learning plan attached.

Text Dependent Analysis (Single Paragraph) Support

Some students really struggle to write a text dependent paragraph. They are not used to having to create their own topic sentence in response to a question. Or, they are not used to having to introduce evidence using transition words. This document will help students understand how to write a text dependent paragraph. It will also prepare students for research writing later, which requires a slight change of wording for introducing sources. If you have any questions, contact me. :)
Some people don't know that at one point in the Civil War, slaves did (in fact) fight for the Confederacy. There were a number of reasons for this that you should research. In the end, fighting for the Confederacy did not guarantee freedom from slavery. What do you think about that?
Notebooks are a required part of both the English and the Social Studies class. Students are required to keep their notebooks perfectly organized. Notebook grades are entered about once per week. Please review this list of requirements with your scholar to be sure that he or she gets excellent notebook grades.
It is important for students to understand the differences in how the North and the South saw the time of the Civil War. A lot of the differences had to do with concerns about money (economy) and slavery. This chart was built during class discussion. These are some key points that can be used in text dependent writing. This question will be on the test!
