ELA/Writing

Suggestions for the first few weeks of school:
  • Write/spell first name (work on last name only if they can write first name correctly)
  • Work on letter recognition and sounds (pick 5 at a time to work on)
  • Practice writing alphabet letters
  • Work on rhyming (Nursery Rhymes are great for this!)
  • Choose 1 or 2 activities to do each day from the Phonological Awareness and Fine Motor Skills handouts in your child's binder.

Here are some suggestions for Language Instruction:
  • Most important:  Read to your child everyday.  Give them time to read everyday.  There is a link to Unite for Literacy on the Students Links page that has a lot of books students can read for free.
  • Reading A-Z.  I will assign books for your child to read.  They can also listen, read and take quizzes on all books that are listed for them; not just the ones I assign.
  1. Alphabet flash cards (write letters on index cards) for letter and sound recognition.  Your child can play GoFish or memory with these as well.
  2. Sight Word practice (videos on YouTube)

Writing Ideas:
  1.  What are their favorite things to do in summer?
  2.  Make a card for someone (birthday, get well, etc.).
  3.  Write a letter to a friend or family member.
