Math Ideas

Here are some suggestions to help with math instruction while your child is home.
Week of July 25-August 30
 
  • Counting orally 1-30 
  • Writing numbers 1-10
  • Recognizing numbers 1-12
  • Counting groups of objects
Addition/Subtraction
  • Dice:  your child can make addition/subtraction sentences using the dots on the dice. 
  • Create number stories for your child to solve.
    • examples:  Sarah saw 5 birds in his/her yard.  3 flew away.  How many are left?
           Jeremy ate 5 blueberries and 1 strawberry.  How many fruit did he eat in all?
 
Measurement:
  • Bake cookies and discuss how important it is to follow the recipe and use the correct measuring cups/spoons.
  • Have your child use his/her shoe to measure the length of his/her bed.  Have your child use your shoe.  Discuss why the total was different.
  • Practice telling time to the hour
 
Number Sense:
  • Practice counting to 100 by ones, fives, and tens.
  • Have your child determine how many plates are needed to set the table for dinner.
  • Use index cards to create flash cards for games:
    • memory (numbers to number words or number to quantity)
    • Gold fish 
 
Practicing writing/making numbers (0-20) in different ways (markers, crayons, play-doh)
